JUNE 28, 2022, POTTSTOWN, PA - It was 6-4 in the finals of the Pottstown Rumble when something totally benign, yet undeniably significant, happened: Teegan Van Gunst tipped up the shot of Jessica Crum, landed from her block jump and calmly set her partner, Aurora Davis. A year ago, during the 29th annual Rumble, Davis may well have allowed her beach brain to take control of what would – should in her mind – happen next. She would have searched for the right shot or swing and hit it, as the rules of the beach would require her to do....

JUNE 23, 2022, POTTSTOWN, PA - It is a nod to the effectiveness of the nascent AVP Grass Tour that at least one of the registrants is making her debut at the Pottstown Rumble this weekend purely because Pottstown is now an established stop on the Tour.  Despite being raised on the East Coast, in Fayetteville, Georgia, Teegan Van Gunst had never heard of the Rumble, which seems almost impossible. The East Coast is, in a volleyball sense, the Grass Coast. The biggest grass tournaments are – at least prior to the quick rise of the Out of System boys,...

JUNE 22, 2022, POTTSTOWN, PA - Angel Dache has sworn off grass volleyball. That’s the story he continues telling himself, anyway. But the temptation can sometimes prove too much for the 31-year-old Cuban-American. Earlier this year, in late April, he was asked to play The Clash, the first stop of the AVP Grass Tour alongside Nick Drooker and Brett Rosenmeier. He didn’t want to say yes. Of course he said yes. “I played and couldn’t walk for three days after,” Dache said, laughing. “I’m too old.” And yet, peruse the entry list for this weekend’s Pottstown Rumble, and you’ll see a familiar...

JUNE 21, 2022, MUSKEGON, MI – The plan was to win two matches and qualify for the AVP Tour Series main draw in Muskegon, Michigan. The plan was to remain in Michigan throughout the weekend, playing deep into the tournament.  The plan was also flexible.  The first bit of that plan went smoothly enough, as Jon Mesko and Kacey Losik won their first match of the Muskegon qualifier. And then things got interesting. In the second and final round, Mesko and Losik fell to Floridians Dylan Zacca and TJ Jurko 21-15, 20-22, 20-22, in one of the wildest matches of the entire...

JUNE 15, 2022, MUSKEGON, MI – You watch as Evan Cory’s line shot sails long, and the scoreboard ticks to 26-24, the final two-point lead required for Dave Palm and Rafu Rodriguez to win AVP Muskegon last Sunday afternoon. You see Rodriguez pump his fists and turn to his partner. You see Palm drop to his knees, spent, every last ounce of energy expended. Six matches in two days would deplete any man. The emotional volatility of contending, and winning, your first AVP, as Palm did, would leave anyone empty. And, really, you’d have no idea. No idea that just two...
